Social Democracies in global comparison: same values, targeted strategies

The recent stunning success of the Australian Labor Party at elections in May 2025 was one of the many issues discussed during a five-day-trip to Berlin by four delegates from New Zealand and Australia. Participants shared perspectives on how to re-engage with the working class and various other topics requiring attention by social democratic players globally.

Beyond the conference, the delegates held talks with German counterparts on a wide range of issues, from challenges to social cohesion and approaches to labour market and housing policies, to current international developments and threats to the global trade system and a rules-based order founded on international law. The program included visits to the Bundestag (Parliament) and Bundesrat, a “parliament of the governments in the federal states”.
